“I’m sorry,” said Garret. “I should have expected this. It’s my fault.” He held her close, his thick-muscled arms showing no sign of strain supporting her body high against his chest.

“I don’t understand.” Cassidy felt safer with Garret since he hadn’t joined in the fight like the others. “I thought you were all best friends?”

“We are. I can’t explain now. We have to get you away from here so they can clear their heads.”

What had she done wrong? She certainly hadn’t refused them anything. In fact, she’d wanted so much more, only to have everything stop short of the grand finale.

He carefully set her on the passenger-side bench of his truck and then jogged around to the driver’s side. She pulled a plaid car blanket over her. It was covered in dog hair, but at least it was large enough to cover her.

“Aren’t you going to do anything? They’ll kill each other.” She may be safe from them, but they were the ones in danger now.

Cassidy didn’t want them ripping each other apart, especially not on account of her.

“They’re not pups. They’ve been through much worse.”

“But—”

“Cassie, trust me, okay?” He looked at her briefly, those dark, haunting eyes holding her in place. “You’ll see them tomorrow as good as new.”

“How? Is there even a hospital within a hundred miles of Climax?

Travis was bleeding.”

“They won’t need medical assistance.” Her mind was whirling as they pulled out onto the road. She turned back to look at the house, half expecting the other three men to spill out onto the front porch, punching and kicking. It was impossible for her not to worry, not to care. The forest canopy blocked out the remnants of the sun, creating thick shadows.
